5 AREAS OF ACTIVITY

The Antartica21 Foundation works in 5 main areas of activity: Education, Culture, Knowledge, Conservation and Cooperation.

Projects / Education + Culture

ANTARCTIC TIME TUNNEL

We believe that the heritage of the region of Magallanes has not been explored in all its the richness. This project wants to highlight how the development of the region is linked directly to the spirit of exploration of those who lived and live in these southern lands. Visitors to the region of Magallanes and its inhabitants currently do not have access to a modern and attractive space that presents the actions of those who have helped explore and understand the southernmost ecosystems in the world.

While the inhabitants of the region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic Territories have a clearly defined identity, they have not internalized their Antarctic heritage in all its splendor. Interest in Antarctica has been growing around the world, and there has been a progressive increase in activities there. Yet there are very few exhibits designed to help the public understand Antarctica and its heritage in an exhaustive way. Our project will fill this gap and contribute with cultural and educational programs that value the significant contribution that the region of Magallanes and its inhabitants have made to Antarctic exploration.

The Antarctic Time Tunnel is a cultural and educational project located at Antarctica21’s Explorers House expedition center in Punta Arenas. It is a highly interactive and interpretive exhibit of the natural and cultural history of Antarctica, with an emphasis on the spirit of adventure, exploration, the ocean, and Antarctic knowledge in general.

PHOTO BOOK

While there is a wealth of literature dedicated to Antarctic themes, only a few volumes have been produced from the Chilean national perspective, and even fewer from the perspective of the Region of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic territories.

On the other hand, throughout its history the expedition company Antarctica21 has built a repository of more than 9,000 high-quality photographs. That represent an interesting opportunity to produce an illustrated publication that uses those images as an opportunity to reflect on Antarctica and our role as humanity.

This project contemplates designing, editing and producing a book of photographs that describes the Punta Arenas-Antarctic relationship, the natural and ethical value of Antarctica or its symbolic-creative value, among other topics.

The book allows us to review Antarctic exploration, identifying nuances that make it move from a nineteenth-century imperialist perspective, in which penetration to the continent is associated with dominance, to give way to others in which conservation is the dominant axis, associated with caring for the life on the planet and our existence. As an example of one of the first signs of the relevance of this tension, are the competing strategies of Scott and Amundsen. Amundsen overshadowed by centuries, chose a more adaptive strategy for his purpose.

ONBOARD SCIENCE

The problems derived from climate change require an effort from all components of society to generate plans aimed at mitigating climate change and adapting to future scenarios.

Currently, despite the significant efforts made year after year by the National Antarctic Science Program, oceanographic and atmospheric data from the geographical areas between Punta Arenas, southern fjords, Drake Passage, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Antarctic Circle are scarce. The main limitation is the availability of vessels that have the capacity (equipment) to obtain data during navigation.

Our Foundation, through public-private partnerships, seeks to make a significant contribution to the generation of new quality knowledge, useful for decision-making, with special emphasis on sub-Antarctic and Antarctic systems.

It is about developing, during the 2021-2022 season, a pilot experience that provides the bases to propose a long-term monitoring and remote sensing program, in order to provide data to decision makers, the national and international scientific community. and civil society. In this way, as Antartica21 Foundation we assume a leading role in facing the challenges of climate change and concretely materialize our contribution to southern ecosystems.

GREEN HYDROGEN

There have been considerable advances in sustainable technologies over the last 20 years and the deployment of such technologies at Antarctic stations and has been progressively completed in most National Antarctic Program operations. These are particularly useful in summer and summer-only installations, but are still not reliable enough for use in winter seasons. Therefore, any request that increases scientific activity entails an increase in fuel needs, especially critical in winter. The international community recognizes as a priority the development of renewable energy source technologies suitable for the polar regions and a significant increase in their use.

The opportunities that the Magallanes region has for the production of green hydrogen under very favorable conditions have aroused the interest of different companies around the world interested in developing the green H2 market from Magallanes. This represents an opportunity to promote the transformation and energy transition of Antarctic bases. However, there are no studies that allow evaluating the appropriate alternatives for the use of energies based on green H2 in Antarctic conditions and with the logistics available.

The Foundation seeks to promote alliances for the development of projects that allow the transformation of the energy matrix of at least one Chilean Antarctic base, promoting the use of green Hydrogen. In a first stage, through a technical evaluation project, the aim is to define the best alternative that allows the use of green hydrogen as an energy source in the Chilean Antarctic bases.
